Now showing at most cinema’s across the West Midlands is the film adapataion if the Scottish feel good stage musical – Sunshine on Leith by Stepehn Greenhorn.
Featuring the songs of the Proclaimers, this little known musical, which follows the story of two soldiers after their return to Britain after fighting in Afghanastan, became a mega hit in when it was produced and toured in Scotland. The stage show began back in 2007 as a modestly staged Dundee rep in-house production. It quickly gained momentum playing to packed houses in Scotland. It didn’t favour quite so well South of the border as a theatre show, despite being a well crafted, beautifully staged and heartwarming piece of work.
But all that is about to change, as early reviews for the film version of the stage musical have been terrific, and WestMidlandsTheatre.com agrees. Having just returned from seeing the movie over in Telford, I have to say that I am sorry I was previusly so unfamilar with this joyous piece of musical storytelling.
The Proclaimers
I also was totally unaware just how many Proclaimers songs I actually knew, and I love them and their music. I’m not quite sure if that should remain a guilty secret or actually makes me geeky cool?
Sunshine on Leith , stars Jane Horrocks and Peter Mullan, and is directed by Dexter Fletcher.
(I know Dexter Fletcher has been in ‘Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels’, and more recently ‘Misfits’ and ‘Hotel Babylon’, but does anyone remember Dexter Fletcher from ‘Bugsy Malone’ or ‘Press Gang ‘pictured. I lused to love Press Gang).
Anyway – go see it, you will not regret it. Below are some videos from the original stage production, and also some behiond the scnes footage of one of the main musical numbers from the movie being filmed.
The movie is now showing at most cinemas across the West Midlands and the Sunshine On Leith Soundtrack is available from Amazon
