About Birmingham Opera Company
Originally founded 25 years ago by Graham Vick and Simon Halsey as a small touring opera company, Birmingham Opera has matured into an an opera company like no other – at the very forefront of 21st century opera production.
Staging staggering opera in the most unconventional of places, conjuring up performance spaces, out of – well nothing to be frank, this highly original company bring unexpected opera to even more unexpected places.
Not only do they engage a volunteer chorus of singers, actors and dancers of all ages and from all backgrounds across the city, but also showcase the most interesting places and spaces, which have included a burnt out rock venue, an old air craft hanger and a disused power station.
Their world premiere of Stockhausen’s “unstageable” Wednesday from Light (which involved 4 helicopters, 2 live camels, a trombone player in a paddling pool and 73 yellow umpire chairs), was listed as one of the top 10 events of 2012 by The New Yorker, The Observer and The Stage, and won the award for Opera and Music Theatre at the Royal Philharmonic Society Awards (the classical “Oscars”).
Birmingham Opera are certainly a company that as well as delivering brummie brilliance by the bucketload, make you tingle with pride to know that companies such as this make up the landscape of West Midlands theatre and performance.
