Albany Theatre 53 The Butts, Coventry, West Midlands, CV1 3BH
Originally opened in 1935, and then closed and left for dead in 2009, the Albany, (formerly The Butts Theatre), is one of our favourite West Midlands Theatres. It quite simply oozes showbiz style inside and out, from the impressive facade and entrance, through to the evoctive art deco foyer and interior, to its lush traditional theatrical red velvet stage curtains and seating. Even the logo for this venue evokes its 1930s heritage.
More impressive is that this 400 seater theatre exists today purely through the passion and commitment of local volunteers, heritage groups and keen individuals who worked tirelessly to bring this theatre back from the grave, and it re-opened again in early 2013.
The theatre does take in the odd professional production and children show, but at its heart this is a community theatre, servicng the needs of local amateur dramatic societies, community arts events and local groups.
The Albany Theatre is a wonderful community theatre, managed by volunteers and supported by Coventry City Council and independent donations
