A troupe of ambitious and highly talented Staffordshire performers from One Productions are bringing the Jonathan Larson hit contemporary musical RENT to Mitchell Arts Centre in Stoke-on-Trent in October. The staging of the show follows months and months of gruelling rehearsals, which have even included a stint working alongside the West End cast earlier in the year.
Seasons of Love
The video above shows the West Midlands performers working alongside the London West End cast, and at the same time shows off one of the beautiful and most iconic songs from the show – Seasons Of Love.
RENT has become a favoirite show of younger amateur dramatic companies across the country, possibly due to its contemporary themes and plot which follows a group of fledgling musicians and artists, struggling to make ends meet. Set during at at time when HIV and AIDS was impacting on many young lives in western society, and set mainly in the loft apartments, bars, street cafes and back streets of New York’s working class East Manhattan district.
A Year In the Life
The musical, although bang up to date in terms of both story and music, is actually based on an Opera from the late 1800s. Puccini’s La Bohème. With many similarities to Puccini’s work, here the young bohemians will make you laugh and cry as they share exactly a year of their life with you during the course of the highly charged show.
However do not be misled into thinking RENT is dark and depressing. Far from it. Although it does deal with tregedy and doesn’t shy from pulling punches about the realities of certain lifestyles, it is also a joyous revolution of storytelling through music, that will certainly entertain you as well as move you.
