Amidst the showbiz excitement surrounding the news that open auditions are being held across the UK for two major lead characters for the upcoming new STAR WARS movie, here at West Midlands Theatre Online we take a look at some of the stage musical versions of one of the world’s biggest blockbuster films.
One Season More – The Star Wars Musical
One Season More below, is the most heavily promoted track from what on the face of it looks like a really well developed star wars musical idea. The effort that the creators of this piece have put into this concept musical is clearly massive, espcially the CGI animation of One Season More.
This 1999 musical version of STAR WARS- A NEW HOPE, was written as a broadway show concept, and to entertain fans of both the movie and of musicals. There is a ‘making of the Star Wars Musical ‘ documentary about the project and you can actually download the entire musical soundtrack for free here and listen to it all for yourself. Backing tracks are also available.
Although the show has been perfromed by amateur groups, it has has never actually been staged professionally. We predict that it never will be either, especially now that DISNEY own the rights.
Star Wars – The High School Musical
Another noble effort, is this ‘warts and all’ US High School production, which stripped away Darth Vaders Mask, to give us a faithful interpretation of the full original Star Wars story. The songs are delivered ‘Forbidden Broadway’ style, with new lyrics written and overlaid over well know musical numbers.
Again a lot of passion has been put into it, and clearly a lot of fun was had. However compared to the more serious One Season More musical above, this Star Wars Stage Musical very clearly has its tounge placed firmly in its cheek.
There are 6 video parts to this full length two act musical to view, which can be accessed below.

Star Wars Hyperspace Hoopla
The final stage version of Star Wars we would like to share with you is actually the only offically endorsed version. But bizarely its actual the least faithful, as it puts the beloved bevvy of characters as part of an intergalactic space revue, with each of them performing up to date hits and classic tracks from the world of pop and rock.
…and witnessing Chewbacca perform LMFAO’s ‘Sexy and I Know It’ is truly something to behold!
Here the entire cast perform PSY’s GANGAM STYLE – complete with Darth Vader heavy breathing.
Despite it being totally out of context, it is clearly the most lavishly produced stage production featuring the Star Wars characters. But you’d expect just that, as this is in fact created by the now owners of the Star Wars universe, DISNEY – who purchased the rights to the entire Star Wars franchise from its creator George Lucas a year or so ago for £2.5 billion.
